As stated before, I don't believe that Phil is blameless in the Sbd matter. He has, quite smartly I think, not said much and let Bobby, in particular, get all the heat. I don't, however, believe that Bobby is some kind of dictator and that what he says goes. Phil must have equal influence to him on matters of the organization. Phil has always been more beloved by most Deadheads than Bobby, and has been seen as a kindred spirit of Jerry's and seems to have gotten a pass on the Sbd issue. I admit that I have always had a soft spot for Phil in my heart and am more willing to give him slack for the recent actions. Bobby has always been more harsh and willing to put himself in the middle of controversies.

I also see that Phil is pre-selling cd's of his shows on the upcoming tour, this just doesn't seem to be in the Dead spirit and I wonder how successful this marketing plan will be. As a guy who has amassed hundreds of hours of tapes and copies of shows over the last 30 or so years, including buying Dicks Picks, dvds and cds, this seems ludicrous. I am not against paying for a copy of a great show, however, it's not like all the shows are the same, or that you can tell how good a show will be or what will be played. If he is determined to sell the shows, and certainly that is his right, I think it would be much more in the spirit of the music and family to allow people to decide after the show whether it is a cd that they would want. After all, one person's stellar show is another one's dog. I hope that Phil will follow the lead of the Dead on their last tour a couple of years ago where people were able to order the cd after the show, or even online. I would be interested to hear if anyone is actually pre-ordering these shows.

I do understand the financial concerns and problems that the GD machine is experiencing. I also believe that by being secretive and not up front about what is going on, they have alienated a lot of people who have been the most loyal fans in music history. As Deadheads, we always felt that we were somehow a part of the family, and recent actions have made many of us realize we were naive. If more effort had been made at communicating with the fanbase, a lot of the disillusionment and bitterness could have been avoided..

so so very true - i feel "betrayed" and that is ONLY because of my own naivete. communication certainly would have been the key to all of this. i would have understood if "they" had just let us know what the situation was. it almost seems like they underestimated their own fanbase (which i find strange, but not impossible). even in "real" families - relationships break down and need to be mended and healed. that is what is needed now - not so much in the form of putting the sbds back up, but, damn, i wish bobby would just apologize for the "see ya" comment. atleast then i could listen/attend ratdog shows.
Purple - as usual, your comments have hit the nail on the head. peace all :)

OK. we never begged, borrowed or stole to see The Grateful Dead and that's why individually or collectively they don't owe me anything. I don't feel "betrayed" but the surviving members should feel betrayed by the behavior of some "deadheads".

It's not me that makes YOU look bad. It was you with the wet cardboard sign "I need a miracle" and the crashing of the gates that got The Grateful Dead banned from playing in so many places that kept alot of people from having the experience. Ya know some folks earn their way. Family, my ass! You must be the toothless, bald headed step?

Last Call,
While we're on the subject of grammar and punctuation, I believe the apostrophe comes after the "t" in it's.

Good catch! Thanks. Do I need an apostophe in thanks? Or does it depend on where it's used in a sentence? Thanks? in advance!

So Phil's pre-selling downloads and CDs for the upcoming tour. Big Deal. He still allows taping at the shows - and I'm sure every show on the tour will show up here in audience form. What did everyone expect - a half-dozen or so soundboards free from every tour??

Phil never HAD to give away the twenty or so SDB freebies since 2000. I've never felt betrayed by Phil, nor do I feel "insulted" by him selling (and pre-selling the shows). Heck, if I see a great show I'll be the 1st in line to pay for the download.

fwiw, you are able to purchase and d/l AFTER the shows...and phil has been quite generous with releasing sbds
